Sabre Esler Explores Physical and Ephemeral Connectivity in The Network

At whitespec in Inman Park, the walls are adorned with small photographs of clouds printed on reflective surfaces. They aren’t framed — they hover slightly off the wall, lending an almost window-like effect. Shadow boxes hold small wire sculptures that juxtapose the 2-dimensional works. The wire sculptures resemble neural networks or mycelium, forming a biological structure that is echoed throughout the show.

These pieces are presented in The Network, a solo exhibition of works by artist Sabre Esler. Root systems, rhizomes and neural networks have occupied the artist’s mind since 2015, when she came across an image of simulated root growth created by programmers researching algorithms. “I didn’t know what to do with the image,” she said, “but kept noodling around with it in my sketchbook.” After reading A Thousand Plateaus and its section on rhizomes, she said, “I was hooked.”
